Building Networking Capability
Reasons networks are important
In all areas of organisational activity, achieving exceptional results increasingly depends on effective networking between individuals. Networking is the process that creates and maintains relationships based on trust, shared interests and objectives. It takes place at the interface between individuals working in diverse roles and often for diverse organisations. These interfaces are exciting areas for generating increased productivity and innovation from new ideas and knowledge.
Networking doesn’t just happen
Everyone has some capability to network and we can all recognise 'natural' networkers. However, relying on innate capabilities:
Does not engage all the individuals required for success
Does not make use of processes to create networks of value to an organisation
Limits the sustainability of networks that do exist
Can lead to information/communication overload for key individuals
Creating effective networks is a particular challenge where individuals and groups have different, even conflicting, reporting lines, working styles, values and cultures. We recognise that it is not enough simply to design a network; relevant individuals, at different levels of seniority, must also be provided with the skills and tools to deliver trusting relationships.
